Stallion Wilderness Study Area

The Stallion WSA is located in central New Mexico, approximately 15 miles east of Socorro. The area is composed of escarpments, box canyons, rolling foothills, mountains, and badlands. The vegetation is typical of the upper Chihuahuan Desert. It is a semi-arid area that is known for its rugged terrain and near vertical escarpments that reach elevations of 7,100 feet. The mountainous topography and numerous rock outcrops are attractive to birds of prey.

From I-25 near San Antonio, NM, drive 12 miles east on State Highway 380 to County Road 129. Drive north on County Road 129 for approximately 6.5 miles then veer right onto County Road 147. Continue two miles, heading northeast, then east to where the road will turn north. From this point continue north for nine miles, passing unmaintained, unmarked, intersecting routes. After nine miles you will be very near the western border of the WSA.
