Mark Twain Lake

Offers a blend of picturesque natural resources and modern recreation facilities to suit everyone. Three campgrounds boast shaded full hookup and electrical sites. The 18, 600 acres of water has a reputation as a great crappie and bass lake. Just 30 minutes from historical Hannibal, Mo (hometown of Mark Twain). Clarence Cannon Dam features a power plant display. The David C. Berti Shooting Range is located below the dam in the Warren G. See South Spillway. Northeast Missouri offers visitors an abundance of diverse recreational possibilities.

BLUFFVIEW (MARK TWAIN LAKE) Campground

Overview

Bluffview is an excellent location for boating and fishing near Mark Twain Lake. Here, visitors can relax on the Salt River and imagine what life was like when the beloved author explored the same waters and created legendary characters like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.

Recreation

Visitors enjoy fishing for bass below the Re-Regulation Dam. Bird watching for waterfowl and boating are also popular activities.

Facilities

The recreation area is for day-use visitors only, and provides a boat ramp, playground and picnic shelters.

Natural Features

Bluffview lies about 10 miles downstream of Mark Twain Lake and the Clarence Cannon Dam. Here on the Salt River, a smaller dam is in place to form a storage pool for wetland purposes. Mark Twain Lake and the Salt River are hugged by tree-topped hills in north-central Missouri.

FRANK RUSSELL Campground

Overview

Frank Russell Campground, set near the picturesque Mark Twain Lake, has a location near the dam, providing campers with easy access to the lake, river and surrounding attractions. The campground also features an amphitheater with weekly events in the summer.

The lake's namesake and legendary author and humorist, Mark Twain, was born in a town beside the lake.

Recreation

The 32-mile long Joanna Trail is accessible from the campground. Here, horseback riders, mountain bikers and hikers can enjoy the rough and varied terrain that meanders along the northern banks of the lake, across bluffs and over hills.

Campfire programs are provided every Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Facilities

Adjacent to the campground, equestrian campers can make use of the shaded horse stalls. Campsites are equipped with electric hookups, paved parking, grills and picnic tables. Other amenities include showers, playgrounds and vault toilets.

Mark Twain Lake is sourced by the Salt River in northeast Missouri. The Clarence Cannon Dam sits on the eastern edge of the lake, providing flood control and hydroelectricity to the region.

INDIAN CREEK (MO) Campground

Overview

Indian Creek lies on the northern banks of Mark Twain Lake. It is the largest campground on the lake with 215 standard campsites, plus additional non-electric and tent-only sites.

The lake is named for the beloved writer and humorist, Mark Twain, who was born just south of the lake in Florida, Missouri.

Recreation

Boating is convenient with Indian Creek's public boat ramp. Bass fishing and hunting are also popular.

Facilities

Indian Creek provides four recreation areas: a public boat ramp, group campground, day-use area and the standard campground.

The group camp provides 25 electric campsites, group shelter, restroom, shower and playground. The Day-Use Area provides group shelter, picnic sites and playground.

The campground offers 190 campsites, 20 primitive hike-in campsites, showers, restrooms, playgrounds, a fish cleaning station, boat ramp, beach, hiking trails.

JOHN SPALDING REC AR Campground

Overview

Visitors at John Spalding are in the perfect location for recreation on Mark Twain Lake. The day-use area is the only facility within reach of the sandy public beach. It's also directly connected to the Joanna Trail, a 32-mile multi-purpose trail for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.

Tour the birthplace of world-famous humorist and writer, Mark Twain and explore the region that inspired his most beloved stories, such as "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer."

Recreation

Swim and enjoy the beach all day, or take a boat out for water skiing and fishing. For hikers and bikers, the lengthy Joanna Trail lines the northern banks of the lake.

The day-use area is equipped with a swimming beach, showers and picnic shelters. Shelters have electric hookups.

JOHN C. BRISCOE GROUP USE Campground

Overview

The scenic John C. "Jack" Briscoe Group area, previously named the M.W. Boudreaux Group Area, is an ideal place for families and groups to explore and enjoy Mark Twain Lake.

More than 2 million visitors travel to the Mark Twain lake region to enjoy the overall magnetism of the area, thanks in part to the author's beloved classics, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and sequel, "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."

Recreation

Fishing, boating and hunting are very popular at John C. Briscoe. Deer and turkey are common wildlife, and bass is the most popular catch in the lake.

Facilities

The John C. "Jack" Briscoe Group Use Area includes six group campsites with picnic shelters, showers and a central playground. Most sites hold a maximum of 24 to 36 people and offer paved parking for RVs, a shaded area for tent campers and an open area for sporting activities. All sites have electric hookups.

Mark Twain lake is large reservoir fed by the waters of the Salt River in northern Missouri. A variety of recreation areas line the lake, in addition to Mark Twain State Park on the western edge of the lake.

RAY BEHRENS Campground

Overview

Ray Behrens is a scenic campground and recreation area, conveniently located on the southeastern shores of Mark Twain Lake. Here, visitors can enjoy the perks of the campground, go boating on the lake or explore the area's historic attractions.

Twain, the legendary author, was born in a village beside the lake and grew up in a town about 20 miles down the road.

Mark Twain Lake provides countless opportunities for outdoor recreation – boating, swimming, fishing, picnicking, camping, hiking and hunting to name a few.

Facilities

Ray Behrens Campground has three loops: Deer Run, Little Bluestem and Cedar Ridge. All campsites come with electric hookups. Showers and accessible flush toilets are in close proximity of every site. The park also features a marina and playgrounds.
