North Platte River

The North Platte River is the only floatable waterway in central Wyoming and has become the destination fishery for the state. Scenic and recreational values of the North Platte River are derived from a combination of environmental factors and management practices. The river is highly valued as a class 1 fishery. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has rated it as a blue ribbon fishery. Game fish species include rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout. The most common recreation activities are fishing, floating, waterfowl hunting, and observing wildlife. There are also opportunities for picnicking and camping. This river has become a vital part of the social and economic values of central Wyoming.

Bessemer Bend Facility

The distinctive Red Buttes stand above Bessemer Bend, the last fording site of the North Platte River on the Oregon Trail. This river, which the emigrants had followed for hundreds of miles, now turned to the south and became impassable. Toll ferries and bridges downstream of the Bend were established after 1847, but emigrants, including the handcart companies of 1856, who did not want to pay the tolls, used Bessemer Bend as a low-water crossing.

There is a BLM interpretive site at the crossing. This site has a parking area, picnic tables, a vault toilet and an interpretive trail. It is a non-fee area and is ADA accessible.


Miles Landing Facility

Miles Landing is a day-use area, popular for picnicking, bank fishing and boating. There are picnic tables with shade structures, a boat ramp, and a vault toilet. The area is ADA accessible.


The Redds Day Use Area Facility

The Redds Day Use Area has an access road, parking area and a one-mile pedestrian trail with interpretive signs. The trail provides access to the river bank. It's a great area for hiking and bank fishing. There are no restrooms at this location.


Whitetail Day Use Area Facility

The Whitetail Day Use Area is a good spot for bank fishing or launching a boat into the North Platte River. There's a boat ramp, parking area, interpretive signs and a vault toilet. It is ADA accessible. There is no fee to use this area.


Pete's Draw Campground Campground

Pete's Draw has both a day-use and overnight camping area to enjoy hiking, wildlife viewing, picnicking, fishing, boating and camping.

There's a parking area, vault toilet, seven overnight campsites with picnic tables, fire rings, shelters, tent pads, and RV parking, trash receptacle, and a hardened pedestrian trail. No water is available at this campground. Campsites are first come, first served. No overnight parking is allowed in the day use area. This campground receives heavy visitation in the spring and early summer months.


Golden Currant Campground Campground
List of Campsites

Golden Currant Campground is the perfect place to go if you want to picnic, bank fish or tent camp. There is a parking area, vault toilet, four overnight tent camping sites, a short pedestrian trail, fire rings and picnic tables. There is no water available at this campground. Please, overnight use is restricted to tent camping only. Campsites are first come, first served.


Buffaloberry Campground Campground
List of Campsites

The Buffaloberry Campground is a great site for picnicking, bank fishing and camping. It is about 12 miles from Alcova. It features four overnight camping sites with tent pads, picnic tables, fire rings, a vault toilet and parking.

Campsites are first come, first served. There is no water available at this campground. The site is ADA accessible.
