A rugged, whitewater river flowing northward through deep canyons, the New River is among the oldest rivers on the continent. The park encompasses over 70,000 acres of land along the New River, is rich in cultural and natural history, and offers an abundance of scenic and recreational opportunities.

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve Tours Ticket Facility

De Soto National Memorial is located on mouth of the Manatee River in Bradenton, Florida. This small 26-acre waterfront park offers lots of opportunity to view the Manatee River and Tampa Bay. The Park was established in 1948 to commemorate the 1539 expedition of Hernando de Soto. We invite you to explore the park's natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and rich history.


Meadow Creek Campground Campground
List of Campsites

Meadow Creek Campground is a primitive campground located along the New River about one mile down the road from Sandstone Visitor Center. Exit Interstate 64 at exit 139 and drive north past Sandstone Visitor Center towards Meadow Creek. In about 1.5 miles turn left and cross the railroad tracks. Bear right and follow the road into the campground. This campground is for tent camping only. (The railroad track crossing can be dangerous for RVs and longer vehicles.)


Grandview Playground Shelter Campground

Overview

The Playground Picnic Shelter is the main shelter at Grandview. It is closest to the main playground and ball fields, located just past the amphitheater.

The Grandview area of New River Gorge National River features five hiking trails, overlooks, a seasonal visitor center, ranger-led activities, summer outdoor dramas (Theatre West Virginia), playgrounds, volleyball court, baseball field, and basketball court.

Facilities

The Playground Picnic Shelter at Grandview is the largest and can accommodate up to 200 people. It is ideal for large family reunions or picnics. It offers a covered eating area, three charcoal grills, and six electrical outlets. Restrooms and drinking fountain are nearby.

Natural Features

Grandview became part of New River Gorge National River in 1990, after more than 50 years as one of West Virginia's most popular day use state parks. The area offers spectacular views of the New River and stunning displays of rhododendron. At the Main Overlook, 1,400 feet above the river, you see an active railway and the town of Quinnimont, where coal companies first shipped coal out of the gorge in 1873.

Nearby Attractions

The city of Beckley is approximately 12 miles from Grandview and offers a wide variety of shopping, restaurants, and hotels. Popular attractions include a children's museum and Exhibition Coal Mine.

Grandview Shelter 1 Campground
List of Campsites

Overview

Grandview Shelter #1 is a smaller shelter located on a hill just off the Grandview Rim Trail near the North Rim Overlook. It can accommodate 40 people inside the shelter and approximately 35 people outside. This shelter is not handicapped accessible. It requires climbing up a small set of stone stairs and a short walk up a small hill.

The Grandview area of New River Gorge National River features five hiking trails, overlooks, a seasonal visitor center, ranger-led activities, summer outdoor dramas (Theatre West Virginia), playgrounds, volleyball court, baseball field, and basketball court.

Facilities

Shelter #1 is enclosed on three sides with a stone fireplace inside. It offers two electrical outlets, one charcoal grill plus a fireplace grate. Playground equipment, horse shoe pit, drinking fountain with side spigot, and restrooms are nearby. This shelter is not handicapped accessible and is not easily accessible for the elderly. Additional chairs, tables, and canopy tent are allowed.

Overview

Grandview Shelter #4 is a medium size shelter located under the canopy of the forest. It can accommodate up to 64 people inside and 26 people outside the shelter for a total of about 90 people.

The Grandview area of New River Gorge National River features five hiking trails, overlooks, a seasonal visitor center, ranger-led activities, summer outdoor dramas (Theatre West Virginia), playgrounds, volleyball court, baseball field, and basketball court.

Facilities

Shelter #4 offers one electrical outlet, and two charcoal grills. Playground equipment, horse shoe pit, drinking fountain with side spigot, and a handicapped accessible restroom are nearby. This shelter is handicapped accessible but the asphalt walkway ends prior to the shelter (10 - 15'). Additional chairs, tables, and canopy tents are allowed.

Overview

Grandview Shelter #3 is a small shelter shaded by the canopy of the forest. It will hold approximately 30 people inside and 42 outside.

Facilities

Shelter #3 offers two charcoal grills, and one electrical outlet. Playground equipment, drinking fountain with side spigot, and a handicapped accessible restroom are nearby. This shelter is also handicapped accessible with an asphalt walkway to the shelter for handicapped/elderly. Additional chairs, tables, and canopy tents are allowed.

Overview

Grandview Shelter #2 is a larger shelter located under the canopy of the forest. It can accommodate up to 80 people inside and 55 people outside the shelter for a total of about 135 people.

Stone Cliff Facility

Located off Route 25 near Thurmond. This campground features 6 walk-in and 1 vehicle site. The Stone Cliff Trailhead also starts at the campground.


Army Camp Facility

Located on an unmarked dirt road, off Route 41 near Prince. From Beckley, take the first left after crossing the New River. There are 11 drive-in tent and RV sites, some with partial shade.


Grandview Sandbar Facility

Located on Glade Creek Road, off Route 41 near Prince. Coming from Beckley, Glade Creek Road is a well-marked right hand turn just before crossing the New River. Follow the gravel Glade Creek for one mile, then turn let down a short winding road to the campground. There are 10 wooded sites for tents and small-medium sized RVs, 6 walk-in tents sites, and 2 accessible sites (with handicapped permit displayed) by the river.


Glade Creek Campground Campground
List of Campsites

Located at the end of Glade Creek Road, off Route 41 near Prince. Coming from Beckley, Glade Creek Road is a well-marked right hand turn before crossing the New River. Follow Glade Creek Road for six miles to the campground. There are six walk-in tent sites and five drive-in sites for tents or small-medium RVs. There is one accessible site.


War Ridge/Backus Mountain Campground Campground
List of Campsites

This is the only campground in the park that is not along the river. It is located on a ridgetop. From Beckley, take Highway 41 to McCreery, cross the river, and continue towards Danese. Turn right onto Backus Mountain Road, drive approximately 1 1/2 miles and turn right at the gravel road (SR 22/7). The campground is on your right approximately 1/2 mile off Backus Road. There are 8 drive-in sites for tents or small RVs.


Brooklyn Campground Campground
List of Campsites

Take Gatewood Road to the Cunard turnoff, between Oak Hill and Fayetteville. Turn, then go 1.8 miles, then follow signs to Cunard River Access. Bear right through the boat launch parking lot and continue upstream for a mile. Sites are on the left. There are four shaded walk-in sites and one drive-in site for tents only.


Thayer Campground Campground
List of Campsites

Thayer has 4 walk-in sites upstream from the Slater Creek Crossing. Alcohol is prohibited. Take Route 25 from Glen Jean for six miles towards Thurmond. Turn right at the intersection just before the bridge across the river and continue towards Stone Cliff. At Stone Cliff, cross the New River bridge and continue upstream on Route 25 (which becomes unpaved at this point) towards Thayer. At Thayer Church, turn downhill off Route 25 to the bottom. Cross the railroad tracks and turn left towards the campground.


Burnwood Group Campsite Campground
List of Campsites

Burnwood is located across Route 19 from Canyon Rim Visitor Center and offers group camping. This site requires a Special Use Permit. For a permit for the group campsites, contact the permits office at 304-465-6517. Permits require a minimum of 10 business days after the application has been received.


Canyon Rim Visitor Center Facility

Canyon Rim Visitor Center is one of the park's primary, year round visitor centers. It is located at the New River Gorge Bridge, just north of Fayetteville. Boardwalk trails provide fantastic views of the bridge and the gorge. The center features exhibits, information, park film, and a book store.


Sandstone Visitor Center Facility

Sandstone Visitor Center is one of the primary visitor centers for the park. It is a green design building where visitors can learn about the park and the watershed through exhibits and a park film. The center also features a native plant garden, picnic areas, and book store.


Grandview Visitor Center Facility

The Grandview section of the park features include overlooks of the New River, a visitor center (open seasonally), five hiking trails, ranger-led walks and talks, summer outdoor dramas, and picnic areas with playgrounds.


Thurmond Depot Visitor Center Facility

Thurmond Depot is a restored railroad depot located in the historic railroad town of Thurmond. When open, the Depot is an information center and a park store.
