Two highways enter the parks. Hwy 180 from Fresno leads east to Kings Canyon National Park, then continues 30 miles east to Cedar Grove. Hwy 198 from Visalia leads east to Sequoia National Park via Three Rivers. Inside the parks, Highway 198 becomes the Generals Highway, which connects 198 to 180.

Vehicles over 22-feet long should enter the parks via Highway 180.

In winter, the Generals Highway between the parks often closes. Chains may be required on park roads.

No roads cross these parks east to west.

Atwell Mill Campground Campground

Overview

The Mineral King area features the highest elevation campground in the parks. At 7,500 feet (2280 m), it is only open during the summer months. A narrow, winding, largely unpaved road leads to the area and its two campgrounds. RVs and trailers are not recommended on Mineral King Road and are not permitted in campgrounds. Mineral King is not connected to the rest of Sequoia National Park by roads. To get here, turn off of Highway 198 in Three Rivers, California.

Trails to alpine lakes and mountain passes begin nearby.

Facilities

The campground is situated along the East Fork of the Kaweah River in a once logged sequoia grove. Atwell Mill campground contains 21 sites. The Atwell-Hockett Trail begins here.

Natural Features

Hikes into the backcountry out of Mineral King will give visitors an ever deeper understanding of the beauty and uniqueness of Sequoia National Park. Hike to alpine lakes and over mountain passes, or climb a peak.

Nearby Attractions

There are limited services at Silver City Resort, 1.7 miles (3 km) east of the campground. More extensive services can be found in Three Rivers, 23 miles (37 km) west of Atwell Mill Campground (approximately 1.5 hours away).

Overview

Moraine Campground in Cedar Grove is nestled in the stunning Kings Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the United States. With the sound of the Kings River, and glowing mountainsides just beyond the trees, Moraine Campground is a wonderful place for families to spend time in the great outdoors.

Recreation

Cedar Grove provides a plethora of hiking trails, from the hiking newcomer to the avid backpacker, and everyone in between. Day hikers can hike to Mist Falls, Cedar Grove Overlook, around the peaceful Kanawyer Loop along the Kings River, through Zumwalt Meadow, and more. Visitors can also fish for trout in the Kings River, or take a scenic horseback ride through the canyon with the Cedar Grove Pack Station.

Facilities

Each site in Moraine Campground provides a fire ring, picnic table and large bear-proof food storage box. The roads through Moraine Campground are paved, making it easier for both RVs and smaller cars to access the campground. There are five comfort stations throughout the campground, all with flush toilets, a large sink for dish-washing, and drinking water. The Cedar Grove Visitor Center is located .75 miles outside Moraine Campground, and Cedar Grove Village is nearby and offers a convenience store, gift shop, snack bar, hotel, showers and laundry.

Tall granite mountainsides cradle the south fork of the Kings River, as streams and creeks feed the river with snowmelt from higher elevations. Abundant wildlife roam through the tall ponderosa pine and incense cedar trees, meadows and along riversides. Overview

Crystal Springs campground is centrally located in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in central California's rugged Sierra Nevada range. This campground is at an elevation of 6,500 feet.

In addition, Crystal Springs campground also has 14 mid-sized group sites available for reservation on recreation.gov. These sites are listed under Crystal Springs Campground Mid-Size Group Sites.

Recreation

There are numerous recreation opportunities in the immediate area. From your campsite, you can hike to a Sequoia Grove that includes the General Grant Tree, the Nation's Christmas Tree and only living memorial to our military veterans. Hike to the beautiful Ella Falls, a 50 foot waterfall or to Panoramic Point for a breathtaking view of the high Sierras.

Their are 35 sites at Crystal Springs campground. Each site contains a picnic table, a fire ring, and a food storage box. Flush toilets and potable water are available at the campground. Each site can accommodate 1-6 people. Crystal Springs campground is located nearby Grant Grove Village where you will find the Kings Canyon Visitor Center, a restaurant, gift store, Post Office and market. Nightly campfire programs are offered at the nearby amphitheater.

Wolverton Stock campsites are centrally located in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in central California's rugged Sierra Nevada range.

Recreation

Forty miles of hiking trails, including the paved Big Trees Trail, invite visitors to immerse themselves in the majesty of the ancient grove. Several additional popular hiking and wilderness trailheads are close by, including the trail to Moro Rock, a granite dome with spectacular views of the Great Western Divide and western half of the park. Tokopah Falls Trail is an easy walk along the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River, leading to an impressive 1200 ft. waterfall. Fly-fishing is also a popular activity on the Marble Fork. There are also many miles of equestrian trails through the Giant Forest and Lodgepole areas.

Wolverton Stock campground is an equestrian campground. It contains 2 sites. Corral, RV parking, and tent site with picnic table and bear food storage box are provided at Wolverton Stock campround. Overview

Dorst Creek Campground is located in the breathtaking Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in central California's rugged Sierra Nevada range.

The campground is perched at an elevation of 6,700 ft., on the banks of scenic Dorst Creek. Several meadows surround the campground and a number of small streams flow through the site.

A handful of popular day-hikes begin from or near the campground, including the trail to Lost Grove, a 57-acre grove containing 15 beautiful sequoias.

Recreation

Dorst Creek lies in the Giant Forest region of Sequoia National Park, where forty miles of trails invite visitors to immerse themselves in the majesty of the ancient groves.

Several additional popular hiking and wilderness trailheads are close by, including the Big Trees Trail and the trail to Moro Rock, a granite dome with spectacular views of the Great Western Divide and western half of the park.

Tokopah Falls Trail is an easy walk along the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River, leading to an impressive 1,200 ft. waterfall. Fly-fishing is a popular activity on Dorst Creek and the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River.

Overview

Sunset campground is centrally located in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in central California's rugged Sierra Nevada range. This campground is at an elevation of 6,500 feet. A number of hiking trails begin within walking distance of the campground including the one mile trail to the General Grant Tree.

Recreation

There are numerous recreation opportunities in the immediate area. From your campsite, you can hike to a sequoia grove that includes the General Grant Tree, the Nation's Christmas Tree and only living memorial to our military veterans. Hike to the beautiful Ella Falls, a 50 foot waterfall or to Panoramic Point for a breathtaking view of the high Sierras.

Facilities

Group sites A & B are for tents only and have paved parking areas. No recreational vehicles allowed. The two group sites include 6 picnic tables, fire rings and 6 bear boxes. Flush toilets and potable water are available in the campground. Each group site can accommodate 15-30 people. Vehicles are not allowed to drive in to sites for unloading ice chests or supplies. Food lockers dimensions for all campsites are 47" long X 33" deep X 28" high. Group sites are located across the street from Grant Grove Village.

CANYON VIEW GROUP SITES Campground

Overview

Canyon View Group sites are located in Cedar Grove, Kings Canyon National Park, California. Cedar Grove is located on the South Fork of the Kings River at an elevation of 4,600 feet. This is a TENT ONLY Group Campground. No RV's or Trailers allowed.

Recreation

Cedar Grove provides some of the best trails in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, especially near Roads End. Nearby the Kings River offers excellent trout fishing. Horseback riding is also available. Expect warm days and cool nights in the area.

Facilities

There are four large group sites and 12 mid-sized group sites for a total of 16 sites available in the campground that offer picnic tables, fire rings, and bear food storage boxes at each site. All Sites In Canyon View Campground are TENT ONLY, NO RV's or Trailers. RV's or Trailers will need to relocate to a different campground where sites may or may not be available to purchase. The campground has flush toilets and drinking water.

There is a small store, snack bar, hotel, showers, and laundry located at the Cedar Grove Village.

Natural Features

The group sites are located in a cedar and ponderosa pine forest at the bottom of the third deepest canyon in the contiguous United States. The Cedar Grove area's glaciated valley features towering cliffs, tumbling waterfalls, and the powerful Kings River, whose canyon gave the park its name. Two prominent rock formations, North Dome at 8,717 feet and Grand Sentinel at 8,518 feet, rise 3,500 feet above the canyon floor. Many species of wildlife inhabit the canyon as well.

Nearby Attractions

Boyden Cave, Hume Lake, Grizzly Falls, Mist Falls, Zumwalt Meadow, Roaring River Falls, Sequoia Groves and numerous hiking trails abound in the area. The Cedar Grove Visitor Center offers ranger-led programs including nature and wildlife presentations as well as ranger-led hikes.

The Crystal Caves are about a two and a half hour (72 miles/116 km) from the campground. Reserve tour tickets in advance on Recreation.gov.

South Fork Campground Campground

This small, primitive campground is situated in a remote area of the foothills on the South Fork of the Kaweah River at the transition from oaks to evergreens. Two trails leave from a trailhead nearby: the Garfield Grove and Ladybug trails. Other park features are over an hour's drive away. There is no potable water here.

Cold Springs Campground (CA) Campground

Overview

The Mineral King area features the highest elevation campground in the parks. At 7,500 feet (2280 m), it is only open during the summer months. A narrow, winding, largely unpaved road leads to the area and its two campgrounds. RVs and trailers are not recommended on Mineral King Road and are not permitted in campgrounds. Mineral King is not connected to the rest of Sequoia National Park by roads.

POTWISHA CAMPGROUND Campground

Overview

Potwisha Campground, located along the Generals Highway in Sequoia National Park, offers convenience for visiting the many attractions in the park. The campground is situated along the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River, just four miles from the park entrance, in the Sierra Foothills. Recreation

There are numerous opportunities for fishing and hiking near the campground. The Marble Falls trailhead is situated adjacent to the campground and several other trails are a short drive away. Access to the Kaweah River is just a short walk across the street from the campground.

Facilities

Potwisha Campground offers 36 reservable campsites. Picnic tables, fire rings and food storage lockers are provided at each site. Flush toilets, drinking water and an amphitheater are available within the campground. A free dump station, open year-round, is located across the highway from the campground.

Natural Features

The Foothills consist of the lower elevations of Sequoia National Park, where the grassy valley floor gives way to granite peaks. Oaks, chaparral, and river canyons are plentiful here in an area with more biological diversity than the conifer forests and High Sierra combined. Winters are relatively snow-free and mild; summer is characterized by hot and dry weather. Wildlife is frequently seen in the area, including the American Black Bear, mule deer, and bobcats, as well as numerous bird species.

Potwisha Campground is located within a 45 minute drive from the Giant Forest, home to the largest trees on Earth. Moro Rock, Crescent Meadow and the Congress Trail are also located in the Giant Forest area, as well as numerous other opportunities for exploration in Sequoia National Park.

Crystal Springs campground is centrally located in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in central California's rugged Sierra Nevada range. This mid-sized group campground is at an elevation of 6,500 feet. In addition to the 14 mid-sized group site there are 35 standard size campsite available for reservation. These sites are listed under Crystal Springs Campground.

Mid-size group sites are for tents only with paved and graveled parking areas. The 14 mid-sized group sites include 3 picnic tables, a fire ring, and 2 bear boxes. Flush toilets and potable water are available at the campground. Each mid-sized group site can accommodate 7-15 people. Mid-sized group sites are located nearby Grant Grove Village where you will find the Kings Canyon Visitor Center, a restaurant, gift store, Post Office and market. Nightly campfire programs are offered at the nearby amphitheater.

Sentinel Campground Campground

Sentinel Campground in Cedar Grove is nestled in the stunning Kings Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the United States. With views of a lovely meadow central to the campground, the sound of the Kings River, and glowing mountainsides just beyond the trees, Sentinel Campground is a wonderful place for families to spend time in the great outdoors.

Each site in Sentinel Campground provides a fire ring, picnic table and large bear-proof food storage box. The roads through Sentinel Campground are paved, making it easier for both RVs and smaller cars to access the entire campground. There are five comfort stations throughout the campground, all with flush toilets, a large sink for dish-washing, and drinking water. The Cedar Grove Visitor Center is located just outside Sentinel Campground, and Cedar Grove Village is across the street and offers a convenience store, gift shop, snack bar, hotel, showers and laundry.

Foothills Visitor Center Facility

This visitor center is one mile past the Ash Mountain entrance station along the Generals Highway. Stop here for information, maps, books, gifts, and restrooms. Browse exhibits about the ecology and human history of the foothills, and join a free ranger-led program.

Giant Forest Museum Facility

The muesum is housed in a historic market in the Giant Forest sequoia grove at 6,500 feet (1,980 m) elevation. Explore exhibits about sequoias and learn why this landscape grows the biggest of big trees. Stop here before you explore the grove. Non-quota season wilderness permits available via self-registration outside of the visitor center.

Kings Canyon Visitor Center Facility

This visitor center is in Grant Grove Village at an elevation of 6,500 feet (1,980 m). Learn about three regions in Kings Canyon National Park: giant sequoia groves, Kings Canyon, and the High Sierra. Watch a 15-minute movie (English/Spanish). A park store sells books, maps, and educational materials.

Lodgepole Visitor Center Facility

The Lodgepole Visitor Center is closed until further notice for renovations. Located in the conifer zone at an elevation of 6,700 feet (2,040 m). Here, you can view exhibits, get a wilderness permit, or watch a park film. Explore the habitats of the parks and human history of the southern Sierra Nevada. The Lodgepole Visitor Center (along with Foothills Visitor Center) also sells Crystal Cave tickets at the Sequoia Park Conservancy Park Store.

Cedar Grove Visitor Center Facility

This visitor center is next to the South Fork of the Kings River in mixed conifer forest at an elevation of 4,600 feet (1,400 m). Learn about the natural and cultural history of the Cedar Grove area. Nearby services include accessible restrooms and a pay phone.

Mineral King Ranger Station Facility

Located in a mixed-conifer forest at 7,600 feet (2,320 m), the Mineral King Ranger Station houses some exhibits on Mineral King's human and natural history. Books, maps, and educational items for sale. Food storage canisters are available. Obtain wilderness permits here. Planning to park overnight? Marmots may attempt to get in your car's undercarriage or damage wiring. Make sure that you wrap the underside of your vehicle in a tarp.
