Steamtown National Historic Site

You'd feel heat from the firebox, smell hot steam and oil; you'd hear the whistle, feel the ground vibrate, and watch as one-ton drive rods turned steel wheels. Remember the sound of "chuff-chuff" from the smokestack? Today, you can learn the history of steam railroad transportation, and the people who built, repaired and rode, as we work to preserve a special era in America's industrial history!

Steamtown National Historic Site Ticket Facility

Steamtown National Historic Site is an industrial heritage site dedicated to interpreting the role that steam railroad transportation - and the people who made it happen - played within America's Industrial Revolution. Located in the center of downtown Scranton, in northeastern Pennsylvania, the site is located just a short two-hour drive or bus ride from major metropolitan areas such as New York City and Philadelphia (there is no passenger rail service available to/from Steamtown NHS, including Amtrak.) Steamtown NHS is located within the center of the once bustling Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad City Yard. The Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad was a major player in the transportation of the Anthracite coal that once fueled America’s industrial revolution. The Steamtown museum complex incorporates the remaining segments of the Delaware Lackawanna & Western roundhouse and locomotive repair shops. Guided programs are offered daily. Train rides are offered on a scheduled seasonal basis. Short train rides offered within the railroad yard do not require reservations. Advanced sales are recommended for longer excursion train rides travel to distant communities beyond the park.
