Fishing is probably the most popular activity on West Point Lake. A dozen creeks and more than 40 square miles of lake provide plenty of good fishing spots for the thousands of anglers who fish here regularly. The lake abounds with bass, catfish, crappie and bream. Bank fishing is excellent at many locations, including public fishing piers at Hardley Creek Park, Rocky Point Park, and McGee Bridge Park. All of the piers provide access for persons with disabilities. Preteens and visitors with disabilities can also fish in a pond at Hardley Creek Park.

Leave Hwy 395 at Toms Place. Follow Rock Creek Road to Rock Creek Lake where there is paved hiker parking. An alternate trail starts from the pack station above Rock Creek Lake.

Long Description

Climbing the slope above the eastern shore of Rock Creek Lake, the Tamarack Lake Trail offers non-wilderness travel options along the shoulder of Wheeler Ridge and Sand Canyon Road. To enter the John Muir wilderness, follow the east fork of Rock Creek into a broad valley and on to Kenneth and Dorothy Lakes. The side trail to Francis Lake is not recommended for stock. At the upper end of the valley the trail climbs to Tamarack Lake and Buck Lake near the top of Wheeler Ridge. Other trails in Rock Creek Canyon have separate quotas. Refer to the area map for trail names.

Eagleview Park offers wonderful views of the West Point Dam and Lake at the southernmost portion of the reservoir. Fishing and picnicking are two of the most popular activities at this park. A pavilion is available for reservations for larger groups. Eagleview Park offers easy trail access to mountain bikers and hikers

Earl Cook Recreation Area Campground

Overview

Earl Cook Recreation Area offers a wide variety of recreational activities. Boat launching facilities are available all year. Seasonally, the swim beach, two picnic pavilions, ball fields, and a playground are open to the public. With a wide variety of activities and easy access from Interstate 85, Earl Cook is becoming a very popular day-use destination.

Hardley Creek Park Campground

Hardley Creek Park is the only Corps of Engineers park operated south of the West Point Dam and Powerhouse. Offering unique wildlife viewing opportunities along with ample picnic and fishing areas, Hardley Creek is very popular among local visitors. Paved walking trails and kayak/canoe launch facilities are also available.

Amity Campground is a waterfront facility on the western shore of West Point Lake, which spans parts of Alabama and Georgia.

This man-made lake has 525 miles of shoreline that provide excellent opportunities for fishing, camping, boating and other recreational activities.

Whether sailing or power boating, West Point Lake is a boater's paradise. There are boat ramps in 34 public recreation areas around the lake, including Amity, as well as two privately owned full-service marinas. Fishing is one of the most popular activities on the lake. A dozen creeks and more than 40 square miles of lake provide plenty of good fishing spots for the thousands of anglers who fish here regularly. The lake abounds with bass, catfish, crappie and bream. Bank fishing is excellent at many locations, including public fishing piers at Hardley Creek, Rocky Point and McGee Bridge parks. Several trails wind along the lake and through the landscape, including the Lakeside Trail, which is perfect for mountain biking. A wildlife management area of nearly 10,000 acres, located at the upper end of the lake, provides habitat for many types of wildlife.
