Nestled in the rugged foothills within sight of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia are the lake and surrounding public lands of Philpott Lake. The clear water and natural shoreline make Philpott Lake a unique place to visit. Over 6,000 acres of surrounding land, 3,000 acres of water, and a power plant make up Philpott Project located in portions of Franklin, Henry and Patrick counties. Congress authorized construction in 1944 for flood control and hydroelectric power generation as the primary purposes, and water supply and recreation as subsequent purposes. Virtual Tour of Lake

Long Description

Several different access points lead to the Baker Lake area. Separate quotas apply to other area trails. Please refer to the area map to determine the trail name.Starting from Big Pine Creek and Glacier Lodge, the Baker / Green Lakes Trail climbs several miles of sage-covered slopes outside of wilderness and eventually winds through stands of Jeffrey pines to climb past Grouse Spring and High Meadow. Views of the Middle Palisade and Disappointment Peak can be seen as you climb over the ridge. The trail follows Baker Creek, to Baker Lake, and continues to descend past Green Lake, Brown Lake and Bishop Creek Canyon.Alternate starting points from Bishop Creek Canyon are near Parchers Resort or South Lake parking lot. These trails climb past Brown and Green Lakes before entering the wilderness boundary. Four wheel drive vehicles with high clearance can access the trail near Baker Creek by driving past Coyote Flat.

Deer Island Campground

Overview

Deer Island is a boat-access only campground with 21 primitive sites available by reservation only. The sites are non-site specific. The closest launch ramp for Deer Island, from April 1st through October 31st, is located in the Salthouse Branch campground. During our non-peak season, from November 1st until March 31st, you may launch from Twin Ridge, Goose Point, or Ramp 1. Potable water and pit toilets are located on the island.

The lake provides visitors with great boating and swimming opportunities. Anglers enjoy fishing for large and smallmouth bass, walleye, bluegill, crappie and catfish. Many miles of hiking and biking trails surround Philpott Lake, allowing visitors to get out and explore this scenic area.

Natural Features

Philpott Lake covers 2,900 acres and has 100 miles of shoreline. The lake's steep, rocky banks meet beautiful mixed forests of oak, maple, hickory, pine and cedar. Wildlife is abundant throughout the area: Deer, turkeys, squirrels, raccoons, and a variety of songbirds and waterfowl are commonly viewed.

Nearby Attractions

The lake is adjacent to Fairystone State Park and Fairystone Farms Wildlife Management Area, which includes 5,300 acres of public recreational lands. 


HORSESHOE POINT Campground

Overview

Horseshoe Point Campground is nestled on the shores of Philpott Lake in the rugged foothills of Virgina's Blue Ridge Mountains. The park is located in a rural and sparsely populated part of Franklin County near the small community of Henry.

Philpott Lake's clear water and natural shoreline make it a unique place for visitors to enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking and camping.

The lake provides visitors with great boating and swimming opportunities. Anglers enjoy fishing for large and smallmouth bass, walleye, bluegill, crappie and catfish.

Many miles of hiking and biking trails surround Philpott Lake, allowing visitors to get out and explore this scenic area.

Facilities

The park offers both camping and day-use facilities: 15 campsites with electric and water hookups are available, as well as 34 primitive sites without hookups.

Amenities include flush toilets, showers, drinking water and a dump station. For additional family-friendly entertainment, a beach, boat ramp, dock, picnic shelter and playground are also on-site.

The park features an overlook where visitors have spectacular views of Philpott Lake and the Blue Ridge Mountains. It offers one group camping area and one day-use group picnic shelter.

Amenities include flush toilets, showers and drinking water. A boat ramp, playground, and hiking trail are on-site. The Powerhouse, Dam and Visitor Center are located in the park.

A 1/2-mile nature loop and a 1/2-mile interpretive trail are available in the campground. Many additional miles of hiking and biking trails surround Philpott Lake, allowing visitors to get out and explore this scenic area.

The park offers both camping and day-use facilities, including 44 family sites with electric and water hookups and one group picnic shelter with electric and water. Also available are 21 boat-in sites and 46 primitive sites without hookups.

Amenities include flush toilets, showers, drinking water and a dump station. A beach, boat ramp, dock, playground, and amphitheater are also on-site.

The campground has spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It offers 63 campsites, 53 of which have electric and water hookups. Amenities include flush toilets, showers, drinking water, and a dump station.


For family-friendly entertainment, a beach, boat ramp, dock, fishing pier, picnic shelter, playground and amphitheater are also on-site.  

During non-peak season (November-March) water will be provided at a community spigot as well as a heated shower house and individual electric hook-ups. Water to individual sites and the dump station will not be provided.
