Black Butte Lake is located approximately 100 miles north of Sacramento and approximately 60 miles south of Redding, off Interstate 5. Take the Orland/Highway 32 exit and go west 8 miles via Road 200/Newville Road and follow the signs.

You do not need a reservation for trips starting at Blackrock unless you will end the trip at Mt Whitney. Contact Inyo National Forest for information about walk in permits for non quota trails.

Long Description
Beginning on the southern border of the Golden Trout Wilderness, the Black Rock Trail provides access to Casa Vieja Meadow and Jordan Hot Spring as it passes through rugged, forested terrain to end at the Wild and Scenic section of the Kern River, near Soda Flat. Connecting trails circle around Kern Peak with many options for loop trips of various lengths.

Buckhorn has 93 campsites, including a group campground and five walk-in sites. Conveniences include showers, a modern boat ramp complex, two playgrounds, an exercise area, and shoreline access. No sites have electric or water hookups. The area is open year-round.Natural Features
Black Butte Lake was formed in 1963 with the completion of the Black Butte Dam on Stony Creek.The lake's surface area measures 4,460 acres when water levels are high. Black basalt buttes and blue oak woodland hug the lake's 40 miles of shoreline.
