There are 10 Corps of Engineers parks, one state park, and three additional parks managed by Hill County or private individuals. Equestrian riders have a great place to explore rolling hills and woods in the McCown Valley Equestrian Area. Hopewell Trail, a 12.5 mile equestrian riding and multi-use trail that winds along the lake and through wildlife areas was opened in 2002. Trail riders can access the trail and stay overnight at the equestrian camping area at Plowman Creek Park.

Long Description

Climbing up pine covered slopes and along Gibbs Creek, the trail to Gibbs Lake is 2.7 miles long. This small lake is tucked in the canyon between Mount Dana and Mount Gibbs. The trail is not recommended for stock beyond the wilderness boundary. The trailhead at Upper Horse Meadows is located at the end of 3 miles of dirt road.

CEDRON CREEK Campground

Overview

Cedron Creek Campground is located on Whitney Lake on the main channel of the Brazos River in Central Texas. The majority of campsites in Cedron Creek are 30 amp electric hook ups with water and 10 sites have water and 50 amp electric hook ups. Each site has a stand up BBQ cooker or a ground cooker/fire ring. The park also has 3 restrooms, showers, horseshoe pits, a trailer dump station, boat ramp and a playground.

Recreation

Boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing and kayaking are popular activities at Whitney Lake. Anglers can fish for a variety of bass, crappie and catfish.

Facilities

The campground offers 57 sites which all have either 30 or 50 amp electric and water. There is a group camp area located near the water and is within 100 yards of a large restroom with showers. The pavilion has a capacity of approximately 100 people and contains eight (8), eight foot tables, electricity, lights, a large (3' X 3') grill and eight campsites.

Cedron Creek is situated on the lakeshore among rolling hills covered with cedar, live and post oak.

Nearby Attractions

The 12.5 mile Hopewell Trail is nearby. It allows hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Visitors can choose to travel north on the trail to Kimball Bend Park, or south to Lakeside Village and Powelldale Mountain.


LOFERS BEND EAST Campground

Overview

Lofers Bend East Campground is located on Whitney Lake on the Brazos River in Central Texas. This campground has 66 campsites and six of which that are "water only" sites and the remaining sites have water and 30 amp hook ups. All sites have either a stand up BBQ grill or a ground cooker/fire ring. The park is equipped with flushable toilets, showers, trailer dump station and two boat ramps.

Recreation

Boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking are popular activities at Whitney Lake. Anglers can fish for a variety of bass, crappie and catfish.

Facilities

This campground offers 66 family sites and one group site, all with water and electric hookups. Six non-electric sites are available as well.


Amenities include flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a dump station, boat ramp and playground.

Natural Features

The park is situated on the lakeshore among rolling hills covered with cedar, live, and post oak trees. Many deer claim this campground as their home.

Overview

McCown Valley is located on Whitney Lake on the main channel of the Brazos River in Central Texas. Over two million people visit Whitney Lake each year to enjoy the plethora of recreational activities and scenic beauty the lake provides.

Recreation

McCown Valley offers five miles of trails in its equestrian park. Visitors enjoy riding their horses through open pastures and wooded areas near the lake.

Boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing and kayaking are popular activities at Whitney Lake. Anglers can fish for a variety of bass, crappie and catfish with a state fishing license.

Facilities

This year-round campground offers a variety of sites to suit all kinds of campers, including 39 equestrian sites, 48 family sites, five sleeping shelters, and a day-use picnic shelter, all with electric and/or water hookups. 13 primitive tent sites are also available.

Amenities include flush and pit toilets, showers, drinking water and a dump station. A boat ramp, playground and trails are also on-site.

Natural Features

The park is situated on the lakeshore among gently rolling hills covered with cedar, Live oak and Post oak. Deer and wild turkeys roam the area.

Overview

Plowman Creek Campground is located on the west side of Whitney Lake off the main channel of the Brazos River in Central Texas. Plowman Creek not only offers many campsites but also includes flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a dump station, boat ramp and playground.

Recreation

Boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing and kayaking are popular activities on the river and downstream at Whitney Lake. Anglers can fish for a variety of bass, crappie, and catfish.

The 12.5 mile Hopewell Trail allows hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Visitors can choose to travel north on the trail to Kimball Bend Park, or south to Lakeside Village and Powelldale Mountain.

This year-round campground offers 44 campsites in Plowman Creek. Thirty of these sites have water and 30 amp electrical hook up (sites 1-7, 10-24 and equestrian sites 35-44). Twelve sites have water hookups only (sites 8,9 and 25-34). All sites have upright BBQ cookers, covered picnic tables and a ground cooker/fire ring. The park also has 2 restrooms with showers and a trailer dump station. Amenities include flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a dump station, boat ramp, playground and a multi-use trail.

Natural Features

The Brazos River flows gently over sand and rocks at Plowman Creek. The surrounding rolling hills are covered with cedar, Live oak and Post oak.


KIMBALL BEND PARK Campground

Overview

Kimball Bend Campground is located on Whitney Lake off the main channel of the Brazos River in Central Texas. The campground offers thirty four 50 amp campsites.

Recreation

Boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing and kayaking are popular activities on the river and downstream at Whitney Lake. Anglers can fish for a variety of bass, crappie and catfish. Visitors enjoy hiking the Chisholm Trail, a historic route followed by upwards of ten million cattle as they traveled northbound from southern Texas to Kansas and adjacent destinations between 1867 and the 1880s. It crosses through the campground and past several historic structures.

This year-round campground offers 34 sites with water and electric hookups. Amenities include flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a dump station and boat ramp.

The Brazos River flows gently over sand and rocks at Kimball Bend. The surrounding rolling hills are covered with cedar, live, and post oak trees.

Nearby Attractions

The park is situated on the lakeshore among rolling hills covered with cedar, live, and post oak trees. Many deer like to enjoy their stay at Lofers West along with the racoons and foxes.

LOFERS BEND DAY USE (TX) Campground

Overview

Lofers Bend Day Use Park is located on Whitney Lake on the Brazos River in central Texas. Whitney Lake gets over two million visitors a year. Visitors enjoy many recreational activities in the area and the scenic beauty that Whitney Lake provides. Lofers Bend Day Use gates will open at 6:00 am and the park will close at 10:00 pm.

Recreation

Boating, fishing, swimming, and hiking opportunities are provided in the park.

Facilities

Lofers Bend Day Use Park offers 29 picnic sites, a reserveable day use group pavilion, a two lane boat ramp, playground, 2 swim beaches, 2 sand volleyball courts, a 1.5 mile fitness trail, and 2 restrooms.

Natural Features

The park is located in Hill County on the upstream side of Whitney Dam and features an oak-savannah landscape including a variety of oak trees, native grasses, and wildflowers. Whitetail deer can often be seen in the park.
